Porterville News Today – Jan 09, 2009

Porterville doesn’t shoot 3-pointers (27 percent) or free throws (53 percent) well, so if MC is sharp with its transition defense, it could bode well. A pair of freshman lead the Pirates offensively, with Keith Viliamu scoring just over

GREAT KID FUN. Rating 5 By Brenda J. Martinez (PORTERVILLE, CA USA), March 17, 2008. MY SON AND HIS FRIEND NEXT DOOR HAVE HAD THE MOST FUN HUNTING EACH OTHER DOWN. THE WALKIE-TALKIES ARE TOUGH AND FULL OF FUN.

Chew on This…

From Gulp! Mexico tells citizens to swallow their gum

Mexicans now chew an average of 2.6 pounds (1.2 kilograms) of gum each year, half what the average American chews but still among the highest rates in Latin America. A lot of that winds up on the street.

Wow let’s run a few numbers here…the Average American ™ chews oer 5 pounds of gum a year. How much is that really?

I would think a pack of 5 sticks of gum would be less then 2 ounces. So 1 pound would be more then 8 packs, and 5 lbs. more then 40 packs.

So the Average American ™ puts away on the order of 1 pack of gume a week.  Not as bad as I thought going in, but still a lot.

Since many, such as me, never chew gum, then others must be putting away a lot more to make up for it.

Shocking implications for PDC?

Little know fact – I studied, nearly minoring in social psychology in college, and my favorite professor was Dr. Maury Silver. Silver was a doctoral student under Stanley Milgram, one of only a very few people thanked by name in Milgram’s book about his disturbing experiments.

I have long thought that this experiment, and others like it, offer fertile ground for the video game creator. Now comes news the experiment, long regarded as too frightening to duplicate, has been duplicated:… Read the rest

Which sets a more dangerous legal precedent? (prop 8 related)?

Which of these precedents is more dangerous?

1: A majority vote being able to restrict the freedoms of a minority group.

2: The federal government overriding a majority vote to give those freedoms back.

I was reading somewhere that people wanted the federal government to intervene and try to legalize gay marriage nationwide. Regardless of how you stand on Prop 8, which of these precedents is potentially more harmful to our democracy?

Clearly #1 is more dangerous, because it is the only one contrary to our long history.

I just returned from a local demonstration, and as a featured speaker, I addressed exactly this topic. I spoke for about 15 minutes, but I will give readers the short version here.

Here we go.… Read the rest

This Land is Your Land, This Land is My Land

As everyone knows, tomorrow’s protest in Porterville, at the corner of Henderson and Newcomb, by the helicopter, is part of a Nationwide demonstration! Come out and join us!

One of the most beautiful patriotic songs ever written is This Land
is Your Land by Woody Guthrie
.

The lyrics are completely secular, 100% inclusive, and descriptive of
the principles our country is founded on, while demanding equality for
all.

We all know at least part of the song, and I think it would be
wonderful if during tomorrow’s demonstration and march we can sing it
to demonstrate the rightness of our cause, and solidarity with each
other and with our brothers and sisters, aunts, uncles, mothers,
fathers and fellow citizens marching across the country.

The song is probably a little longer then you remember, so I am
including the lyrics below, and here as a pdf file.

please print them out and bring them to the demonstration.

the pdf file has two pages, one with one copy of the lyric, and one
with two, so you can make extra copies without wasting paper, for
those who might not be able to bring a copy, or who might not see this
message.

Finally, since I am not sure if attachments are allowed, a few minutes
after I send this message, I will upload the pdf file to the yahoo
groups page in the Files section (Link below in the message footer)
and also on my blog at Portervillenerd.com

THIS LAND IS YOUR LAND
words and music by Woody Guthrie

Chorus:
This land is your land, this land is my land
From California, to the New York Island
From the redwood forest, to the gulf stream waters
This land was made for you and me

As I was walking a ribbon of highway
I saw above me an endless skyway
I saw below me a golden valley
This land was made for you and me

I’ve roamed and rambled and I’ve followed my footsteps
To the sparkling sands of her diamond deserts
And all around me a voice was sounding
This land was made for you and me

The sun comes shining as I was strolling
The wheat fields waving and the dust clouds rolling
The fog was lifting a voice come chanting
This land was made for you and me

As I was walkin’ – I saw a sign there
And that sign said – no tress passin’
But on the other side ….
